Job DescriptionThermo Fisher Scientific is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to join its IP Department. Technical areas of focus for this position include software, workflows, and chromatographic technologies. You will support a variety of intellectual property activities including: invention harvesting, patent preparation and prosecution, freedom-to-operate analyses, IP searching, and portfolio development and management. You need to be a self-starter who can bring new ideas to the team and rapidly develop an understanding of the technology and business strategy for your areas of support so that you can provide leadership in the IP process. This role will report directly to IP counsel responsible for chromatography and software and support technology platforms and related products and services. This position will be based in Sunnyvale, California with limited travel to other US and European sites required. Key Responsibilities:
- Securing patent protection for inventions developed at Thermo Fisher Scientific, including drafting applications and Office Action responses, developing strategies for identifying and capturing high-value IP
- Providing product clearance opinions and advising R&D staff regarding design-around activities
- Advising and educating internal clients regarding IP-related issues, including new developments in laws and policies
- Manage and improve processes for tracking innovations and competitor IP activity.
- Supporting litigation counsel in US and foreign activities, oppositions, IPR and PGR
Experience and Skills:• Four or more years of experience preparing and successfully prosecuting U.S. International patent application experience is a plus, (writing samples will be requested)• Background or experience with analytical instrumentation and data analysis and interpretation software • A B.S. or advanced degree in related field such as Chemical engineering, Chemistry, or Biology; with a strong background in software for data analysis• Ability to develop practical processes / approaches, and to drive solutions to completion

- Fluent in spoken and written English (additional language(s) an advantage)
- Strong sense of Ethics and Integrity
- Registration to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
